This winter has been a rough one and most likely, those of you without a mudroom have been racing around kids and spouses who have tracked snow, water, sand and mud all over your nice clean floors. One way to add value and space to your home is by adding a mudroom. Believe it or not, mudrooms are also highly desired by homebuyers. So you will actually increase the value and desirability of your home by adding a mud room to your home.

A mudroom can solve the ‘stuff everywhere and mud all over the place’ problem. It can solve other problems, too. What is a mudroom and how can it help your life?

It is a room or area near the most commonly used entrance. It can also be a room or area near an entrance that is only most commonly used in the winter or other messy time of year. The mudroom is where you can remove snow-covered, wet or muddy boots and clothes. It is the room where the coats, book bags, equipment bags and house keys hang.

A mud room can be any well-designed space that you can use to bring order to frequently used ‘stuff’ at the entrance your home.

If you think you could benefit from a mudroom in your home, here are a few things to consider.

  • Location: What is the most frequently used entrance? If the entrance is from the garage into the house, an area inside the garage near the door can be used. If you have an entrance where a mudroom would work best, but it is not the most frequently used entrance, could it be a functional entrance during the winter/snowy seasons?
  • Size: If there is an entryway or utility room inside the door, that’s the perfect place to create a mudroom. Even a well-thought-out small space can be tremendously useful.
  • Uses: mudrooms have are most beneficial in the rain and snow, but think year-round. A mudroom can be useful 12 months a year.
